Nias Island (NISP Project)

"NISP Project" 2007–2009

"Welcome to Nias Island" 2007–2009

In September 2006, I was hired by the NGO UN-Habitat to work as an Engineer Facilitator. This was a pilot project for UN-Habitat, an organization that had previously constructed 486 housing and sanitation units in the Aceh region.
In Nias, the ADB (Asian Development Bank) entrusted UN-Habitat with the pilot project to build homes in Tuhemberua Sub-district, North Nias. This initiative was intended to be a model that other NGOs would later follow. The Aceh Nias Settlements Support Programme (ANSSP) has so far completed 3,500 houses and more than 1,000 are currently under construction.

The "Nias settlement project" generally refers to the post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts on Nias Island following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunamiThese efforts aimed to rebuild homes and infrastructure and support the community's recovery. Several organizations, including the Indonesian government and international bodies like the World Bank, were involved in these projects.

After six months with UN-Habitat, I joined the ADB (Asian Development Bank) Off-Budget Team as a Supervisory Consultant. I was responsible for overseeing the work executed by the NGO Help.ev (The partner of ADB to implement the Projects), which included new house construction, house renovations, sanitation facilities, and road construction.
